Crowns & Bridges at South View Dental

Dental Crowns

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that is placed partially or completely on top of a tooth that has been weakened or damaged.

If your tooth has been damaged, but is not totally lost, a crown can restore your tooth’s shape, size and strength. A crown is normally used when fillings can't solve the problem because of a lack of tooth structure.

Crowns are used for teeth that have undergone root canal treatments, and also provide the “tooth” part of a dental implant. In any case, when your tooth is snugly fit with a custom-made, nature-looking crown, your smile will look normal again.

The different types of crowns are metal, porcelain-fused-to-metal and all-ceramic. The all-ceramic crowns can be matched to blend with your natural tooth color and shape, which make them very popular with patients.

During your first crown visit, our dentist will take a mold, also called an impression, of your broken tooth and the area around it. That mold is sent to a lab that will create your custom-made crown. Our dentist may give you a temporary crown until your permanent crown is ready.

On your second visit, our dentist will remove the temporary crown, check to see if the permanent crown is the right size and shape for your mouth. If the permanent crown fits and looks the way it is supposed to, our dentist will give you some painkiller and cement the permanent crown on your tooth.

Crowns usually last 5-7 years, but can last much longer if you brush and floss your crown (and teeth) regularly and don't bite hard food or objects. Proper oral hygiene determines your success, so our dentist will give you some important tips.

Dentistry is as much of an art as it is a science. Our experienced dentist has a strong eye for aesthetics to make sure that your crown blends in seamlessly with the size, shape, color, and texture of your normal teeth.

Dental Bridges

What’s a Dental Bridge?

Dental bridges are a type of procedure used to fill in gaps between missing teeth. They are called bridges specifically because they “bridge the gap” between teeth using a false tooth that is placed in between two adjacent teeth that are bonded into place using different types of materials.

Why Would I Need a Dental Bridge?

Dental bridges are recommended because gaps in teeth may cause long-lasting issues with your bite. By ignoring gaps in the teeth, your surrounding teeth may shift out of place and cause issues such as overcrowding and crooked teeth. To add, missing teeth may also alter your entire facial structure as bone loss can occur.

Types of Dental Bridges

There are different types of dental bridges that your dentist will recommend based on x-ray results and an oral examination.

Traditional Bridges

These are one of the most common tried and true dental bridge techniques that involve creating a crown for the tooth or dental implant on either side of the missing tooth, with the false tooth (also called a pontic) carefully placed in between. They are typically made from either porcelain fused to metal or ceramic materials.

Implant-supported Bridges

These are a relatively newer type of dental bridge that provide the same durability and structure as natural teeth, but are generally only used when more than one tooth is missing. If only one tooth is missing, a traditional bridge will be recommended. However, your dentist may also decide on utilizing implant-supported bridges if they feel you will put too much pressure on your isolated dental implants that are not supported.
